Goal
I aspire to inspire and support Thai women in reaching their fitness aspirations. The cornerstone of achieving this goal is the emphasis on "consistency is key." This concept laid the foundation for the development of this app.
Project type
To provide context for this project, it was a personal endeavor spanning 12 weeks. The motivation behind selecting this project stemmed from my deep passion for fitness and a recognized market opportunity in Thailand. The tools employed throughout the project included Figma, Miro, and Illustrator.
My role
I served as a UX Researcher and UI/UX Designer.
Problem discovery
I often hear a familiar inquiry from my friends: "What keeps you motivated to consistently exercise?" In their discussions, they express the challenge of maintaining motivation, noting that their bursts of enthusiasm tend to fade after a few months, leading to the abandonment of their workout routines. This repetitive cycle establishes a pattern of starting and stopping exercise regimens. It becomes evident that establishing exercise habits requires genuine desire. Unlike the commitment involved in joining a gym, attending fitness classes, or hiring a personal trainer for guidance, apps can be easily set aside and overlooked.
Interview insight
In my investigation into consumer behaviors and involvement in exercise and fitness activities, I conducted one-on-one interviews with eight users. The findings unveiled that a notable proportion of Thai women chooses not to utilize fitness apps for their workout routines. Instead, they gravitate towards exercising at home and select workout videos on YouTube based on their preference for influencers whose body types they aspire to emulate. They also noted that the majority of existing fitness apps are viewed as repetitive and lacking excitement.
User persona
Building on earlier discoveries, I identified and classified primary user types into three distinct personas:
Solution
Building on earlier discoveries, I identified and classified primary user types into three distinct personas:
- Integrate video content to inspire and engage users.
- Utilize peers to maintain user motivation.
- Implement a leaderboard system to encourage users to take on challenges.
Wireframe
I believe every successful project commences with pen and paper for swift idea generation and iterations. Initially, I sketched the app's main features on paper, and after refining those rough sketches, I translated them into a digital wireframe.
Prototype
I opted for the vibrant color orange, symbolizing joy, enthusiasm, success, and motivation. Choosing rounded shapes aims to create a friendly and approachable feel for the app. Drawing inspiration from platforms like Dribbble, Behance, and various fitness apps in the market enriched the UI design process.
If I had more time...
- Thoroughly document each step of my design process.
- Conduct usability testing to validate my design concepts.
- Adhere to best design practices, including constructing a design system and components for an enhanced workflow.
Takeaways and what I'd do differently
A crucial lesson moving forward is the importance of designing with intentionality. Completing this project emphasized the significance of carefully considering every element and understanding how they collectively contribute to the final result. In the future, I will ensure a meticulous approach to each aspect of the design process.
